About Kanyi mavi

Kanyi Mavi is a fire spitting emcee hailing from the township Gugulethu, in the mother city, Cape Town who raps in her native tongue, isiXhosa.

She entered the scene in 2002 rapping in local open mic sets. Since then she has shared the stage with international hip-hop artist Bahamadia, legendary producer 9th Wonder and lyricist, Rhapsody and also opened for Mos Def at the 2009 Cape Town International Jazz Festival, who also listed her as one of his favourite rappers in South Africa.

Kanyi Mavi is a lyrical diviner. Her wordplay and cadence are unmatchable. She’s already shared the stage with Lauryn Hill and got a major co-sign from Yasiin Bey, who listed her as one of his favorites in South Africa. Kanyi has an interesting story, as she’s a spiritual being, and is in touch with the ancestors.

In 2019, Kanyi Mavi geared up for the release of her EPK entitled iGubu Lam (My drum), a drum-based urban music project where she collaborated with Swedish producer, Ted Krotkiewski.

Her freestyle would make time stop, as Sway and his co-hosts’ faces contort in disbelief at the rapper’s ability to play with words and rhyme bars.
